About the artist.

Rabbett Before Horses Strickland’s paintings introduce viewers to Nanabozhoo, who first appeared to the artist in his dreams. Nanabozhoo is a complex character from Ojibwe mythology, both of the Earth and a creator of all things and creatures on Earth. Possessing supernatural powers, he creates medicines to heal the sick and give assistance to the weak and oppressed. But like humanity, Nanabozhoo has been “subject to the need to learn”. Sometimes he is an active participant in the painting; more often, he is a solemn witness. The supreme being for Strickland’s Nanabozhoo is the Earth – Gitchi Manitou. Nanabozhoo is an emissary from Gitchi Manitou. He did not come into the world but rather came from it. Both spirit (manitou) and human, Nanabozhoo embodies that which everyone must decide: are you a part of the earth or did you come from someplace else?

Early in his career, Strickland, studied the forms and the studio practices of European Renaissance and Baroque masters. Using those traditional glazing techniques he marries traditional European techniques/forms together with a classically-drawn subject matter, deeply rooted in Anishinaabe culture. He lives and maintains a studio near Bayfield, Wisconsin.

How to purchase this NFT.

First, although this isn’t necessary for the purchase of an NFT on the Algorand blockchain, we highly suggest you set up an account with a digital currency exchange platform that supports Algorand so you can familiarize yourself with the cryptocurrency exchange process. There are many exchanges out there, but Coinbase is one of the largest. Here are a few others if you would like some options.

Step 1) Create your Coinbase account here.

Step 2) Connect your payment method

Step 3) Buy a small amount of Algorand so you know what the blockchain is and how it works.

Once you feel comfortable with the concept of fungible cryptocurrency and how it works on an exchange it’s important to understand that an NFT is a Non-Fungible-Token, meaning it lives on the blockchain but does not have an agreed upon market value (just as any piece of good art). The NFT is a digital deed certifying authenticity and ownership.

The point we’re driving at here is although Algorand has a fungible market value that stays the same across all exchanges, it doesn’t follow that the market value of the NFT you’re receiving will be in any way influenced by that volatility. The NFT itself is directly related to the piece of art it refers to. So just as you would place special emphasis on the safekeeping of a piece of art, you should also place special emphasis on the safeguarding of the NFT related to that art. The NFT is not money – it is a digital deed. When creating an Algorand wallet, it is important to take these steps seriously so you don’t in any way jeopardize the security surrounding your NFT, or set yourself up for losing access to that NFT in the future.

Step 1) Download the Algorand wallet on your smart phone. For Apple users, set your wallet up here. For Android users, set your wallet up here.

Step 2) Follow the instructions to set up your wallet.

Step 3) You can now top up your Algorand wallet with the Algo purchased from your Coinbase account.

Once you have purchased the painting, send your wallet address to our gallery manager, Amanda Hunter, and she will facilitate the transfer of the NFT related to the artwork you purchased to your Algorand wallet.

Frequently Asked Questions.

An NFT is a Non-Fungible-Token representing a digital deed of authenticity and/or ownership. It is stored on the digital ledger of blockchains, certifying the item it refers to (whether physical or digital), to be authentic, unique and therefore not interchangeable. The blockchain an NFT exists within provides the owner with transparent, verifiable proof of ownership concerning the item listed by the NFT.

Therefore, choosing the right blockchain is important. Which is why Joseph Nease Gallery uses Algorand.
In this case, you are buying a painting and receiving the NFT as proof of ownership and authenticity. One of the principal misconceptions about NFTs is that they are in some way the art itself. NFTs are simply digital deeds implying ownership and authenticity. Although this misconception will be reduced over time as more and more people familiarize themselves with decentralized currencies, we feel it is important for all of our clients to understand specifically what an NFT is and how it relates to the digital or physical item it protects.
The short answer is no. We aren’t forcing anyone to receive an NFT for the art they’ve purchased through the gallery. We are providing this service because we believe it will help to protect both collectors and artists in the coming sea change of online economies, and the incoming web 3.0 ecosystem.
The NFT comes along with the art. See our step-by-step guide above for setting up your Algorand wallet to receive the NFT.
Transactions made on the Algorand blockchain are public and can be viewed by everyone.

Please Note: By receiving this NFT you are allowing your Algorand wallet ID to be made public as part of the project. This is part of the built-in transparency in virtually every blockchain – Algorand is no exception to this rule.
After reviewing a wide range of blockchain protocols, their existing business relationships, and how they operate as a public ledger, we chose Algorand for a number of reasons.

The open-source Algorand network is a ‘Pure Proof-of-Stake’ blockchain that consumes over two million times less energy than ‘Proof of Work’ networks like Bitcoin or Ethereum. The low carbon footprint of Algorand means developers and users can prioritize innovation without compromising sustainability. The recent interest in the ecological impact of NFTs has amplified a relevant and substantial advantage Algorand has against other networks.
